The European Flag

The Hessian State Government is committed to the process of European unification and supports a strong European Union. The EU fosters freedom, peace, wealth and democracy on our continent. Promoting European integration and looking after the State’s interests in European politics are the foundation of Hessen’s European politics, which focus on the interests of its citizens and those of the State of Hessen itself.

The State of Hessen, which combines unique European capacities as a financial, transportation, research and innovation location, is particularly interested in the options that European politics offer. Consequently, the Hessian State Government makes use of its opportunities to shape European political matters and it consequently and responsibly fulfills its duties in shaping European integration.

As a strong state in the Federal Republic of Germany and a strong region in the European Union, Hessen actively participates in lawmaking at a European level. Through its participation in the Upper House of the German Parliament (Bundesrat), the European Conference of Ministers (ECM) and the Committee of the Regions (CoR) as well as its formal and informal contacts to European institutions, the Federal German government and the German Parliament (Bundestag), the State influences numerous initiatives. On several different levels – in Brussels, Wiesbaden and Berlin – the State government thus very successfully pursues European political projects that are relevant for Hessen by actively participating and by being present during discussions and negotiations.

Lucia Puttrich, Hessian Minister of European and Federal Affairs and Representative of the State of Hessen at the Federal Government, and Mark Weinmeister, member of the Hessian Parliament and Deputy Secretary for Europe, are responsible for the outline of Hessen’s policies towards Europe.  The Department for Europe and the Representation of the State of Hessen to the EU in Brussels support European developments in close coordination with the sectoral ministries and stand up for the interests of the State of Hessen.
